Tracks and Walks

The Rimutaka Forest Park has many recreation opportunities suitable for a wide range of users including short walks, longer day tramps, overnight stays and hunting opportunities. The Department of Conservation (DoC) provides detailed information about the tracks on their website.

The main tracks in the valley include:

Orongorongo Track

One of the most popular walks in New Zealand, this well-developed track passes through different types of bush, leading to the Orongorongo Valley.

Big Bend Track

The Big Bend Track follows along the true right of the Orongorongo River and links with the Orongorongo and Whakanui Tracks.

Mt Matthews

Mt Matthews is the tallest peak in the Rimutaka range and the nearest to Wellington. The climb to the summit will take you 949 m above sea level.

Mt McKerrow - McKerrow Track

At the top of Mt McKerrow in Rimutaka Forest Park trees block the views but on the way up you get extensive panoramic views of Wainuiomata and the Hutt Valley.

For more information about the tracks in the area see the DoC website.

Department of Conservation Huts

Spending a night or two in a hut in the Orongorongo Valley is a brilliant experience!
The valley’s close proximity to Wellington and well-maintained Orongorongo Track makes it an ideal location for families to experience their first overnight stay in the bush.

The Orongorongo Valley has six huts available to the public. Booked huts in the Orongorongo Valley/Rimutaka Forest Park are available for exclusive hire. Bookings can be made via the online booking system or by contacting the DOC Wellington Visitor Centre  on 04 384 7770 . To access the online booking system and find out more about the huts see the Rimutaka Forest Parks Huts section.

Hunting

Recreational hunting is encouraged except in the Catchpool Valley, the Landcare Research area, and within 200 metres of the Orongorongo River where, because of a high level of public use, discharging of firearms is prohibited. Although hunting is permitted in the Turere Stream Catchment - dogs are not allowed in this area.

For more information about hunting in the Wellington Region see the DoC brochure. Hunting permits can be obtained from the DOC Wellington Visitor Centre.
